The $1,500 BJ

A guy is strolling along Vegas Strip when a stunning hooker catches his eye. He strikes up a conversation and eventually asks, "How much?"
The Hooker replies, "$500 for a hand-job." The guy's jaw drops: "$500 dollars, For a hand-job! No hand-job is worth that kind of money!"
The hooker says, "Do you see that Hard Rock cafe on the corner?"
"Do you see the Hard Rock about a block further down?"
"And beyond that, do you see that third Cafe?"
"Well," says the hooker, smiling invitingly, "I own those. And, I own them because I give a hand-job that's worth $500."
The Guy says, "What the hell? I'll give it a try." They retire to a nearby motel. A short time later, the guy is sitting on the bed realizing that he just experienced the hand-job of a lifetime, worth every bit of $500. He is so amazed, he says, "I suppose a blow-job is $1,000?" The hooker replies, "$1,500."
"$1,500? No blow-job could be worth that." The hooker replies, "Step over here to the window, big boy. See that casino just across the street? I own it. And I own it because I give a blow-job that's worth every cent of $1,500."
The guy, basking in the afterglow of that terrific hand-job, says, "Sign me up." Ten minutes later, he is sitting on the bed more amazed than before. He can't believe it but he feels he truly got his money's worth. He decides to dip into the pension savings for one glorious and unforgettable experience. He asks the hooker, "How much for some pussy?"
The hooker says, "Come over here to the window. Do you see how the whole city of Las Vegas is laid out before us, all those beautiful lights, gambling palaces, and showplaces?"
"Damn!" the guy says, in awe, "You own the whole city?"
"No," the hooker replies, "but I would if I had a pussy."

[AA] The Prisoner's Dilemma

Thou shalt not kill
The car was silent as she stared aimlessly out the back window, taking in the grey October sky. Her brother was in the front seat, drumming his fingers on the dashboard in an equally listless manner. She saw the slightly squatty brick facade of the bank come into view, saying a quick prayer before they pulled into the parking lot. For a moment, she thought her brother would break the silence. A few words of encouragement, maybe. Instead, he turned around and gave her a little squeeze on the shoulder, for good luck. Probably. The two of them, the driver, and the other passenger, walked up to the bank casually, hands tucked in drab hoodies. Their entrance was marked by a happy little ding, the snap of rubber bands on masks, and a quick spray of gunfire.
“Everyone down!”
Ashe had started working three years ago. She was fourteen then. Her dad had died in a car accident and her mother was a deadbeat. She and her brother, Nate were thrown out of the house four months after the funeral. He had tried to get a job, but nobody would hire a “high-risk teen”. After months of trying and failing to get back on their feet, they had given up and were lost to the system.

So they improvised. Their father had taught Nate how to fight after being bullied at school, while Ashe took gymnastics lessons at the Y for ten years before the accident. Naturally, this type of talent translated into crime. After an unglamorous string of pickpocketing (close calls: 15), burglaries (glass cuts: 4), and street scams (people fooled: 17), they had made off with about three thousand dollars and a plethora of bruises to show for it. Every day, Nate told her that it would be the last day, that he’d find a real job soon. Every day up until they were approached by the smiling man who said Ashe was a nice young lady and that Nate was a strong lad who could help him move his shopping bags to his car.
Thou shalt not bear false witness to thy neighbor

“He had said he had gotten the silent alarm! He said it was ‘all quiet on the western front’!” Nate was yelling from the front seat, rage barely contained within his panicked tone.

Meanwhile, the driver, Alex, was trying not to crash into anything as he glanced upwards to the rear-view approximately every three seconds. The sound of police sirens could be heard vaguely in the distance, but more concerning was the police scanner sitting on the dashboard buzzing with information about their eyes, height, and hair color.

“We have to ditch the car.” Ashe said, voice cracking. “Not even something as inconspicuous as a grey Sentra will get us across town.”

Alex cursed softly. The nearest parking garage was five miles away and their tech guy had already scampered off like the little ferret he was. They might have had ears to the police’s movements but it was like a neon colored mouse trying to hide from a pack of bloodhounds. It was only a matter of time. As if on cue, a beige Crown Vic peeled away from the curb and started following them down the street, turning its sirens on. Alex’s cursing became louder as the din on the police scanner grew as the police’s fervor surged with excitement. He stamped hard on the accelerator as the group distanced themselves from the crowded city streets and transitioned to empty desert straightaways. The sign that read “You are now exiting Tashono, Arizona” came and went like a point of no return. Now it was just them, the red rock formations of the hazy Arizona desert, and the growing entourage of police cars behind them. It would have been a good time for a miracle right about then. But God doesn’t grant miracles for thieves. Not for people like Ashe and Nate. She said a prayer anyway.
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s goods

“It’s a real easy job. Small town, small bank. They’re gonna get a delivery that afternoon, my inside guy’s confirmed it. Boss will be happy. Plus, the vault’s an older model, just need a code. Sean can hack that easily enough. Right, Sean?”

The kid briefly looked up from his laptop and mumbled something that sounded like an acknowledgement. Alex coughed, awkwardly.

“I’m driving, while our hacker,” he took a glance towards Sean. “will be at the cafe down the street taking care of the silent alarm and the vault door. Meanwhile, we’ll pacify the crowd, bag the cash, and get out with only a few scared men and women to remember us by.”

Ashe wasn’t convinced.

“What’s with all the firepower then? Seems like a lot if we aren’t expecting resistance.”

Nate nodded. Neither of them liked guns despite being around them almost constantly in the criminal underworld.

Alex gave an evil little smile, one that made Ashe shiver.

“You never know what’s going to happen, Ashe. I’d rather have a gun than the alternative.”

“Taz, Ashe, do something! Get them off our tail!”

Ashe was thrown back into the present as the swerving of the car mixed the red rock with the blue sky in an unpalatable soup. Taz was the other guy in the back seat, the quiet tag along to heist. He was barely old enough to legally own a weapon, and here he was ready to point his rifle out the window and fire on the pursuing cops. Ashe had her own pistol but it felt foreign in her hands, a cold, alien piece of metal.

The window was down.

The megaphone, blaring in their ears.

Taz is sighting down his rifle.

His finger is on the trigger.

Ashe gives her brother a grave look. She’s scared.

They both are.

And she hits Taz on the head with the handle of her gun.

Nate punches Alex in the face.

The car screeches to the left, protesting. They hit a rock.

Bills are flying in the air, like doves. The world dissolves into red and blue.

Thou shalt not steal

Somehow, the bright LED light of the interrogation room is harsher than any Arizona sun. The grey walls more claustrophobic than any cave. The interrogator, more hungry than any vulture.

“You have quite the file, Ms.Dyne. Honestly, when reading your story, it almost makes sense why you turned to crime.” The woman made a smile, just like the nice man who made them this way. “Almost.” She continued on, at length about the epic odyssey of the chase of the Phoenix gang. “You’ve robbed branch banks in Flagstaff, Sedona. You even went as far as Las Vegas, a year ago.”

Ashe winced. The casino heist was supposed to have been clean. No trace.

“Your little hacker friend, Sean? He was quite helpful in all of this. Once we linked him to a data heist in Singapore, it was all downhill for you from there. Have you ever heard of the prisoner’s dilemma? It fits right in with all this. Compared to the alternative, ratting you guys out was the easy choice.”

Of course.

“You’ve stolen quite a sum, Ms. Dyne, And it’s just out of you reach. Down the hall, and to the left. Almost 200,000 dollars right there. You were lucky, they had just gotten a delivery.”

The interrogator’s phone rang, an angry little buzz that momentarily distracted her. Before she could yammer on to some unseen victim, however, the power went out. Just as she had wiggled out of her cuffs with the bobby pin she had stashed in her sleeve.

Of course.

“You stay...Right here, sweetie. I’ll be back to ask you more questions as soon as we fix this little hiccup.” With that she stormed out the door to find someone to bark orders to.

Ashe waited three seconds, then bolted. She found Nate first, chained in an identical room with an identical set of cuffs. He looked surprised to see her.

“Ashe? What are you doing? How did you get out?”

She flashed the bobby pin to him, then quickly picked his cuffs with a click.

“Down the hall, to the left.” She said, breathlessly. Nate nodded. They passed Taz and Alex on their way to the loot room, looks of disbelief, shock, and anger merged into one as they screamed to be freed. No honor among thieves. They stuffed as much of the cash back into the duffel bags as they could, bills of various denominations still spread about like Thanksgiving leftovers. Ashe and Nate dashed into the Arizona sun once more, duffel bags filled to the brim with ill-gotten gains once more.

“What now, Ashe?” asked Nate. They were back to square one, now. Alone save for each other, lost to the system.

“We improvise.” She said. Then she whispered another prayer. God shouldn’t grant miracles to girls like her, but all are equal before the Lord.

What happened to Las Vegas?

Las Vegas as a It seems like like the hotels nickel and dime people FOR EVERYTHING. Want to use the pool, or the gym, or the concierge? Well, today is your lucky day! The hotels took all of the services and activities that used to be FREE and used them as an excuse to charge a resort fee... If that wans't bad enough, now the hotels are charging for PARKING! But don't worry, they are only charging so they can provide you with new infrastructure and better service... if you believe that I know a Nigerian prince that would like to talk to you.
So you payed to park, you paid for your over priced room, and finally you paid the stupid resort fee. Now it should get better right? I mean, you payed so much the hotels have to offer something right? NOPE! Gone are free buffet vouchers, gone are free drinks, gone is pretty much any sign of value. The drinks at the casino bars are about 4-5x overpriced - NO, I don't want to pay 22 dollars for a real cadallac margarita (patron gold, lime juice, Contreau w/ Grand Marnier. I was told that Vegas is transitioning from a gambling destination to luxery nightclubs and high end pool parties. They wonder why people don't gamble as much, sure the economy plays a part but the main reason is: no one wins anymore!! The slots and other machines have been tightened down to the point where not only do you expect to lose money, it isn't even fun anymore. Put $100 bucks in lose it all before even 1 "bonus game" comes up. Don't get me wrong, you will "win". Ya, you "win" $0.15... too bad the spin cost ya $5. The casinos don't bother to run any worth while promos anymore, the slot and video poker machines have been tightened up, and the casinos don't comp shit anymore. Instead of a free buffet, now you get 10% off a buffet! Instead of a free night, you get a "Super Special Player's Club Rate" (great, 8% off...on the weekdays).
So back to this Luxery night club scene. Here is a Vegas night club explained: Charge guests at least $30 to get in, drinks have to be $20 each and be light on anything that is not RC Cola or cheap sugary syrup, for music - choose between electronic that all sounds the same after 45 minutes or whatever rap songs that everyone heard 1000 times on the radio making the drive, Man... really? Am I the ONLY one here that is sick of nightclubs?
I can't be the only one that is sick of these "cool" hotels. The only guy I know that brags about staying in the [Fancy Pants Hotel] is a 350 fat guy who posts quotes like "It's hard being friends with girls when all they want is sex" on Facebook daily - who although he swears he has "boned a ton of super hot girls, some models even", he has NEVER had a GF. In fact, no one has EVER seen him spit game, touch a girl (the notorious arm gram doesn't count, might even prove my point further), or bring a girl home (Maybe you have met his brother - the guy that is always showing of his bottle of Cristal, the same one he has had for 5 years...) . However, it seems that there are enough of these losers dying to impress women by their baller economy room with view "penthouse" that go to those Luxury nightclubs to make Vegas turn into douche bag central.
Sure, there are still a couple of good values left - but they are dying fast. One can get 4 real Patron Cadillac margaritas for the price of one at [fancy pants hotel] by taking a trip down the strip to Circus Circus or Stratusphere. If you can stomach the smell of regret and cheap hookers. The Hard Rock is still doing the 777 deal, however the cab ride is probably going to cost ya triple that each way. The Casino Royale has Michelobe Ultra's (a type of beer that no one knows exists outside that small casino) and what they call "margaritas" for $1. Plus they have the only 100x odds craps on the strip (which is actually pretty damn good, craps has one of the lowest house edges available). The Magnoila cafe has a descent prime rib dinner that with coupon comes to ~$10. Sure one can go downtown and have some fun for less, but lets be honest. If the fancy lights aren't above you, you have a good chance to getting robbed/mugged/assaulted.
The sad thing is I don't see the last good values lasting too long. Iconic hotels like the Riviera and the Sands is just the beginning, in a couple more years all the values on the strip will be replaced with "luxury hotels" following MGM's lead: Charge for Parking, Charge Resort fees, Charge for what used be complimentary. RAPE people for nightclub entrance, nightclub drinks and Shows (although last time I went I did get a good deal on Blue Man Group and Phantom of the Opera tickets...but only after I spent hours looking). One has to wonder, what the fuck are they going to charge for next? House keeping? Towels? Soap and Shampoo? Is there going to be a curtain over the window next time I go, with a dollar fee to open for 15 minutes? Is the AC going to be p4p?
Sorry for the rant, I just honestly think that resort fees and having to pay for parking in a place like Las Vegas should be criminal. I remember my mom grabbing a handful of my quarters (that I was using at the ARCADE) to play the slots while waiting for my pops to come down from the room and winning 400 in quarters. I remember my neighbor that would get so many free nights he couldn't possibly using them all just from comps from buying in $800 at the poker table. I remember my friends parents going to Vegas every weekend they could, and winning. They used to keep track of their winnings vs. money spent on gambling, room, food, etc. They said they hardly ever had years where they were in the red more than 1k - and most of the time they either didn't spend anything or came home with more than they left with. Those same people not only don't keep track anymore - they have basically stopped gambling. They both played Video Poker, and it has gotten to the point where they don't even enjoy it anymore. Last time I saw them in Vegas we met up at a hotel for dinner. I went to get my friend, her dad and I drinks from the bar (because all they would comp was "mixed drinks", that could best be described as a splash of the lowest of the low plastic bottle rum or vodka - honestly can't tell which its so god awful - combined with "soda" that makes those shitty bargain brand sodas seem like nectar of the gods). I was gone no longer than 5 minutes, and when I returned her dad wanted to leave. He had lost almost $300 dollars in video less than 5 minutes. He wasn't playing a crazy high roller machine either, he was playing $0.50/credit and 5 credits. He didn't win (not counting pairs) one hand. He didn't even get dealt a 3 of a kind (which anyone who plays video poker knows, is one of the most exciting things because your praying for that 4th one and a nice win!) once!
Tl;Dr: Vegas sucks. With the addition of resort fees and parking fees and the transition from a gambling destination to a luxury night club destination it is quickly turning into tool central.

Las Vegas tour date announced!
Gizz is playing at the Hard Rock Cafe with Orb. Big news for me, a denizen of Salt Lake City who thought he'd have to go to San Francisco to see them this year :)

Hey Rosetta!, a great band from Newfoundland, is on tour in the US this (and next) month, you should check them out.

I first heard about Hey Rosetta! when I was living in St. John's. I was invited out to their CD release show having never heard of them before. I was blown away and have been making sure to see them anytime they swing through Nova Scotia. They are a highly entertaining live show and if you live in or near these cities it would be worth checking them out. I think they are touring with Hot Hot Heat (also Canadian).
Some of my favourites of their videos:
There's An Arc - Very fun video for “There’s An Arc” filmed in the lead singer's (Tim) house. I believe it is all one take.
Red Heart - video for “Red Heart” which is one of their more well known tracks I think. It has been on CBC radio 2 a bunch.
Red Song - “Red Song” is not from any album (Their is an EP of it though) but it is just wonderful.
Black Heart - Live video from the Majestic Theatre in St. John's (incidentally where I first saw them play), thanks to Bumblebeeman for mentioning this tune.
Olympic Video Essay - Stephen Brunt’s video essay on Canada’s 2010 Olympic experience (which ends with “Red Heart”).
